Rest Easy With Light Therapy for Sleep

Everyone has a circadian rhythm that governs ones sleep and wake patterns throughout the day. This circadian rhythm is basically our natural inner biological clock that relies on the patterns of natural light and dark times of the day. Once this is disturbed, a persons sleep pattern is disrupted.

Light therapy for sleep helps the brain in responding to external signs for sleep and waking with the use of light. The use, timing, duration, and intensity of the light therapy will depend on the type of disorder of the patient. Those whose circadian rhythms are disturbed are usually unable to sleep, those who wakes up frequently during the whole night and cannot go back to sleep easily. On waking, the patient also feels he is not refreshed.

Sunrise Alarm Clocks for a Better Night's Sleep

This process to treat sleep disorders uses artificial lights for fixed time periods in order to bring back the patients natural circadian pattern. The light treatment encourages his system to be awake during daytime.

Light boxes are the most common devices used for light therapy. This contains fluorescent lights that shines bright and is used by the patient from 15 minutes to two hours depending on his diagnosis. This is done during morning and evenings.

Another strategy used is dawn simulators, which imitates sunrise and sunset. The patient's room is gradually lighted (or darkened) in natural increments of time. This is to signal the brain that it is the time for sunrise or sunset, as the case might be.

With the exposure to this simulated light, the brain is tricked to process the appropriate time signal and transmits this to the body. This will gradually puts his circadian rhythm to the correct natural synchronicity.

Other Sleep Disorders Treatable with Light Therapy

The biggest sleep disorder is when the sleep-and-wake cycle governed by a person ís internal clock loses synch with the natural light and dark cycles of the natural surroundings. Usually, these are triggered by other external factors and carried over time until the person ís whole sleep system is disrupted and out of rhythm with natural events (night and day).

Other sleep disorders that can be treated with light therapy include sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and restless leg syndrome. Sometimes, these can be blamed by factors like caffeine, anxiety, and large meals. The brain releases melatonin at the wrong time, and makes you awake (or sleepy) at the wrong times of the day or night.

Another disorder is the advanced sleep phase syndrome (ASPS). The patient usually wakes up and sleeps at earlier times than what is typical. The disrupted pattern makes it difficult for him to adjust to normal work or other day schedules. This procedure can bring his sleep pattern in natural sync.

Light therapy used on sleep disorders are light boxes that simulated the sunlight ís wavelengths and directed on the body for a prescribed amount of time every day. Your doctor will specify the times of the day to use it, including the intensity and the length of time for the whole treatment.

Wondering what light therapy is and why you keep hearing great things about it? Wonder no more!

There are many light therapy products available for home use today treating everything from skin and sleep disorders to pain and depression. As you will find, light therapy has a vast spectrum of uses.
